“Still Moving is about recognizing that even in stillness, movement persists. These images honor the lives that quietly hold the city together, while reminding us that memory and migration are always in motion.”
— Jonathan Edora Sarmiento Jr. (Jayr)
Jonathan Edora Sarmiento Jr., known as Jayr, is an architecture student, artist, and photographer based in Dubai. The artist’s practice draws from the lived conditions that shape memory and time. The exhibition is structured as a dialogue between the past and the present, where visual mediums and stills showcase the transformation of Deira, one of Dubai’s oldest districts, through the eyes of its migrant inhabitants. While the cityscape changes, the emotions, struggles, and aspirations of those who move through it remain constant.
Still Moving
Still Moving is an exploration of time, migration, and memory through the lens of a personal yet collective narrative. At its core is a 2008 JVC camcorder, once held by the artist’s father to document his life in the Philippines and Dubai, now repurposed by the artist to capture his own experiences in the same city. This act of continuation transforms the device from a mere recording tool into an artifact of memory, a witness to the landscape and to the people that shape it.
By capturing everyday moments of laborers, shopkeepers, and long-time residents, Still Moving acknowledges their presence, that of which are often overshadowed by the skyline.
Through this visual archive, the artist invites viewers to reflect on migration and memory, and the identity of Dubai. Still Moving is about recognizing that even in stillness, movement persists.
